The mayor of Rome, Roberto Gualtieri, was on hand at City Hall to honor and celebrate the ladies of Roma’s Serie A (First Division) team and their first-ever “scudetto” victory (the national title of the Italian women’s soccer league). The team only came into being five years ago.
The event was also a way of presenting to the public Roma’s new CEO, Greek-born Lina Souloukou (who was the former managing director of Olympiakos Pireo). On hand representing the famous Roman club were also Betty Bavagnoli, the head of Roma’s Women’s Football, head coach Alessandro Spugna and the team’s captain and national team captain Elisa Bartoli and her fellow teammates.
Italy’s national female team will again taking part in an all-important international event in August as FIFA’s Women’s World Cup will be co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand.
